Hey everybody, I just discovered an abandonware version of the very first Battletech PC game (BattleTech: The Crescent Hawks Inception from way back in 1988!) You can download it for free at www.xtcabandonware.comThe game is listed as BattleTech 1 in the "B" section. These are some serious old school graphics!

I remember playing this; I didn't get too far (my processor was WAY too fast). Brings back memories, though!

Hehe it actually works fine on my computer without any extra software... but I've run into a snag. I can't seem to actually get past the "test" in the game. As a lot of you know old games back in the day used the manual for copy protection. They have a phrase in the manual which you had to input into the game so people couldn't just copy the files. Unfortunately, this game also has one of those. It has a diagram which you have to fill out labeling 'mech parts. I know my 'mechs pretty well... but I still can't get it. Has anyone figured out how to get past this yet?

Rhodes this game is awesome! Now if only someone would make a battletech RPG with real-time combat...
This game has given me an idea though... I might start working on a little battletech RPG of my own - unfortunately it will still be 2d but I might be able to do real-time combat. Who knows... it might even be based off of the Legionnaires ;D.

Admittedly they are not too impressive but I went to a game design workshop here in Washington. We have nintendo and lots of other game companies up here and nintendo helped sponsor a small company called digipen which a game design college. You can actually get a masters in game design if you want. Anyway, I didn't go to college there but this summer I went there for 2 weeks for about 8 hours a day and they teach you a lot of C++ and how to use a game engine. During the last few days we programmed our own games using what we learned. I posted a link to my game a few weeks ago I think, but I don't know if the site I uploaded it to still works - I'll post a link to it here later. Some guys at mektek are working on a game called mechtonical which seems to be a lot like Crescent Hawks Inception but with a lot more 'mechs (all of them I think). I'll try and find some more info about it because I think you'd like it a lot if you like Crescent Hawks. Now if only I could do 3d...
Bekker however is our champion game programmer I believe, he's actually getting a degree in game design.

www.geocities.com/eskimofishergame/The mcattest is my start ;D. It might take a little while for the download box to pop up though. I'm posting this because I have a question about how the 'mech movement feels - I can either have it kind of jerky with the footsteps or smooth. To make the 'mech move smoothy hold down K. Laser ball things (pusle lasers perhaps) are space and missiles are left control. My fish game is there too - it's fun, play it .

Dude nice job on the test. Keep it up. If you get the game fully done I would like to know. Definately looks like a freakin fun game to play. Nice job.

Very cool start! I love how the Mad Cat looks and fires its weapons. A BattleTech game based on your design would be fantastic! Keep it coming!
Personally, I prefer the smooth Mech movement mode. While the jerky one is probably a bit more realistic, it gets a little hard on the eyes after awhile.
The fishing game is fun too!

Allright well Bekker also said that smooth is better so I guess smooth it is. Does anyone have some nice sound bites for 'mech feet stomping?
