The Sheratan Planetary Militia
Intelligence Brief
Sheratan, like any other world, has a local militia force to defend its sovereignty and maintain order. This has become especially critical since the devolution of the Sarna March into the Chaos March and the subsequent wirthdrawal of Federated Commonwealth forces from the region. Sheratan has been forced to fit more of the bill for its own defense and drastically increase military spending to keep the ambitious Capellan Confederation and other neighboring powers at bay. So far the tiny world has accomplished this through careful neutrality and a well trained home defense force.
Planetary militias are genuinely dominated by conventional armor and infantry, unlike the BattleMech regiments of the Great Houses or the Toumans of the Clans. Currently, the SPM can muster three armored regiments and six infantry regiments for a total of some three hundred armored vehicles and six thousand troopers.
In general, about a third of the vehicles are heavy tanks, while the rest are lighter hovercraft and armored scouts. The infantry tend to be mechanized and armed with rifles, machine guns, and portable SRMs, though there are a few anti-mech and jump infantry units with more advanced weaponry. Currently the SPM does not field any battle armor suits.
In addition to the above forces, the Militia can muster about a company of Mechs (mostly older light and medium designs), a combined arms urban warfare battalion (The Sewer Rats, consisting of a mech lance, an armor company and an infantry company), a battalion of field artillery (2 batteries of Long Toms, and 1 battery of Arrow IV launchers), and an Aerospace fighter wing with 20 craft.
The insignia of the SPM is the world of Sheratan beneath a rising sun on a red shield, with a crossed saber and musket beneath the globe. Major-General Thomas Hamilton, a veteran of the War of 3039, currently commands the Sheratan Militia.
The ranks of the SPM are inspired by those of the Federated Suns and are as follows;
Enlisted Grades
1. Private
2. Private, First Class
3. Corporal
4. Sergeant (Squad Leader)
5. Platoon Sergeant
6. Company First Sergeant
7. Battalion Sergeant-Major
8. Regimental Sergeant-Major
Officer Grades
1. Subaltern
2. Leftenant (Lance/Platoon)
3. Captain (Company)
4. Major (Battalion)
5. Leftenant-Colonel
6. Colonel (Regiment)
7. Leftenant-General
8. Major-General
