The infirmary is quiet, and smells strongly of antiseptic. A long, central corridor runs the length of the building, branching off to areas marked "O/R" "Triage" "ICU" and "Outpatient." A smaller directory, posted nearby, affords a more comprehensive listing of the services available.
In the waiting room, a nurse clad in World War II-style attire sits at a data terminal, bearly acknowledging your presence. A set of oversized leather chairs surrounding a coffee table, and flanked by dusty artificial plants, afford a haven for those waiting to be attended to.
Upon closer examination, you notice that the holomags spread across the coffee table are all dated "3066."
Fortunately, you need to catch up on your reading.

I was going to do this earlier but felt it was more important to get current with the operation. I am just filling in the details.
After leaveing the QuarterMaster I make my way to the Infirmary. I walk up to the reception nurse.
"Hello, I just joined up."
"How can I help you?"
"I brought my Medical and Dental records." I handed her a datapad. "These are both my military records and from my private physicians."
She looks at pad. "Your in luck. Your physical is out of date. Have a seat. A doctor will be with you sometime today." She cracks a evil smile and hands me a clipboard. "Fill this out as you wait."
I sit down and fill out the form. I make it through 3 of the holomags before a nurse takes me to a exam room and takes my vitals. Eventually a doctor come to see me.
"Hello Lieutenant, how are we today?"
"Don't know about you but I am fairly busy. I just came in to make sure the unit knew about my TDS."
"Transit Disorientation Syndrome is fairly common. Just how bad is yours?"
"It's a pretty typical case. Dizziness, double vision, severe disorientation which lasts 10 - 20 minutes. I feel nauseated for 6 or 7 hours and am rather unpleasant to be around durring that time. Another jump durring that time and I am out cold."
"Sounds pretty typical. I will make sure the Thorin's medical officer knows." The doctor reaches for his rubber gloves. "The social part of this exam is over."

"Ma'am, can you see what you can do about this?"
A lady wearing a white medical had turned to see my burn-cut.
Damn, sweetie. I'll see if I have any biofoam, but ther'es no time for surgery. Medicine and bio-foam are your best bet.
She game me 4 yellow pills and applied bio-foam. It stung untill I walked out of the Infirmary to go to sleep. Damn Kintaru...

I woke up in a moder DropShip's infirmary. There was no telling what the hell was going on. I had a dream that I saw tribes... or... maybe not. I also saw a man smiling at me, and I remeber saying: "Thank you"...
I snapped back to reality as drills and surgical devices cut and opened me up. The pain was unreal, and I couldn't see a thing. Then, a sudden realisation of where I was hit me when I saw a sword with a shining star titled L e g i o n n a i r e s on the wall. Connections and flashes of immages of what had happened in the last 2 months flashed in my head...
Commander Wayne... Sheratan... Thunderhead... Phoenix... communications bouy... Slocum recharge... Hamal... Schuster's fall... cold desert... Sudanjin... extreme explosion... others... village...

TWO WEEKS AFTER THE OP.
Walking in the door, to check on my last patient from the last Op. Zhukov was sitting up in bed smiling. He was definitely better. I walked over to his bed reading his chart, checking the readings of all vital signs.
Well Zhukov you are looking much better. Let me check your breathing.
Putting the instrument to his chest in several different places telling him to take deep breaths
Oh Yeah, that lung of yours is doing great. The ribs have healed nicely. Feel like getting out of here?
Oh God Yes!!! Please let me out!!!
OK OK, I guess you've had enough of all this attention.
Oh I love the attention, just can't stand being in this bed all the time.
I understand Sargent Zhukov. It was a long haul for you. We had to go in and repair your punctured lung and mend the ribs. Just needed to give your body enough time to heal. It would have been a lot longer if it weren't for the advanced technology that Captain Maxwell spares no cost for. Sargent Zhukov you are officially released from the infirmary. Get dressed and you can be on your way.
Thanks Doc. nothing against you or your staff, but I'm very happy to be blowing this place.
No problem, I understand completely.
Zhukov got dressed and left with a smile on his face, he saluted me. I returned the salute. I then started getting all the equipment turned off, as the tech, got the bed ready for its next patient.

My arm and back began to hurt after a while and considering my acrobatics in my Mech during the last Op, it was no wonder. However, I had passed it off as nothing much and carried on.
The pain began to intensify more and more as time progressed and combined with my regimented physical fitness routine, I was sure I was doing more harm than good.
I decided to goto the infirmary.
Besides, the medical staff has a few people that aren't hard on the eyes either.
I wandered into the infirmary and brushed past an ecstatic Sgt. Zhukov that was off to enjoy his release from the confines of a bed no doubt.
I saw one of the Doc's, Dr. Jessica Saturnia. I attempted a salute but a sharp pain shot through my arm and I winced in pain.
Please Corporal, let me have a look at you.
Yes maam.

Just as Zhukov left happy, Corporal Taylor walked in the door. He attempted a salute, but didn't quite make it.
Please Corporal, let me have a look at you. Sit on the bed over there and I'll check that out for you.
He climbed on to one of the beds. I got out the Eligus diagnoser scanning it over the area of Taylors body that seem to be giving him the problem. I finished the scanning and looked at the read out.
Well Corporal, you have a couple of cracked ribs, very painful but not life threatening. Tech Wyatt help him off with his shirt so we can run the bone regenerater on him. Corporal as soon as your shirt is off lay down.
Wyatt assisted Taylor with his shirt, he laid down on the bed . I ran the bone regenerater over the two ribs that needed mending. It didn't take long, the machine was amazing.
Now Corporal, that will take care of the bones, it will still be sore, I want to wrap your ribs just to make sure you don't over do because it will feel a little better.
I wrapped Taylors mid section. Then gave him a mild sedative in a hypospray.
This will help you sleep tonight Corporal. Put your shirt back on. Check back in a couple of days and we will take the wrap off. Now don't forget. I have to release you for combat, and I'll come looking for you if you don't return.
Yes Doctor. I promise I will be back in two days.
He jumped off the table, went to the door, turned around and saluted me this time slower, with a little wink. I saluted back. He was gone. I titled my head with a puzzled look.
... wonder what that was all about .....
I shrugged, looking over at Wyatt, who was smiling.
Get back to work.
Yes ma'am

Please Corporal, let me have a look at you. Sit on the bed over there and I'll check that out for you.
I clamored onto the closest bed with a bit of difficulty. I sat and watched as the Doc ran a machine over my body and looked at what it told her.
Well Corporal, you have a couple of cracked ribs, very painful but not life threatening.
Tech Wyatt help him off with his shirt so we can run the bone regenerater on him.
Corporal as soon as your shirt is off lay down.
Yes maam.
I'd take my shirt off for this Doc anyday I mused.
The tech helped me get the shirt off and I could see the bruises I had simply ignored, which were much worse than I recalled.
As I laid back, Dr. Saturnia ran another device over my chest which had a slight tingling sensation as it did whatever it was supposed to do.
Now Corporal, that will take care of the bones, it will still be sore, I want to wrap your ribs just to make sure you don't over do because it will feel a little better.
As she wrapped my mid section. I smiled a little as I realized I had a crush of sorts on her by now. She was very cafeful and tender, but at the same time very intent on her technique.
Then I received some sort of hypospray. Probably some sort of sedative or pain reliever.
This will help you sleep tonight Corporal. Put your shirt back on. Check back in a couple of days and we will take the wrap off. Now don't forget. I have to release you for combat, and I'll come looking for you if you don't return.
Yes Doctor. I promise I will be back in two days.
Oh, don't worry Doc, I'll not miss out a return visit.
I hopped off the table, went to the door, turned around and gave a slow, but crisp salute and a little wink. She returned the salute as I did an about face and walked out of the infirmary.
I pondered what I could say to her in my followup.

I got up and cleaned up the best I could with the wrap still on my chest and donned a clean uniform. For the past 2 days, I have been taking it fairly easy, which has been driving me nuts.
Used to a strict regiment of physical fitness, the days off felt like I was slacking off. With the exception of fighting non-stop on the battlefield, I had never taken a break this long.
I smiled as I looked myself over in the mirror. Normally, I didn't give Doctors the time of day, even the rare cases when I was a patient. This one though deserved near inspection ready appearance.
...she still doesn't know you like her. Hell, she might have a guy and hate you.
I shrugged to myself slightly and walked over to the infirmary. I signed in and awaited my turn and decided to pass the time with the most recent holomag they had available. Which was some catalog for MechWarriors. Not too many mech parts and mechs, but mostly personal gear.
I scrolled through the various things and saw a few nicer styled Neurohelms that looked more like the pilots helmets worn back on Terra over a millenia ago. The style looked very nice and I made a note to myself to order one from a more recent catalog.
Dr. Saturnia will see you now.
What about for dinner...I mused.
Thank you.
I walked into the main examination area and gave a crisp salute and a slight smile to the Doc.
Good morning maam.
Good morning Corporal, please have a seat.
I cut my salute and hopped onto the exam table and awaited the good Doctor's exam.

Corporal Taylor walked into the exam room. He gave a crisp salute and I returned it.
Good morning Corporal, please have a seat.
He got onto the exam table. I looked around for Wyatt, but he was busy with something else. So I was going to have to help him off with his shirt myself.
Ok Corporal let's get your shirt off and I will have a look see. Have you been staying fairly in active for the most part?
I helped him pull his shirt over his head. Although he didn't really seem to need help. The range of motion in his arm seemed much better.
Yes ma'am I have followed your orders to the letter, which was no easy task for me.
Well I'm glad you did. We want you combat ready, especially since we have a new Op in progress. I don't think you would want to be stuck on this ship, while the Op was going on.
No, ma'am I definitely would not.
I removed the wrap carefully. The bruises were gone. I pressed gently on the location of the cracked ribs. He gave no response. Just to make sure I scanned him with the Eligus. It read no trauma.
Well Corporal, you are back to a 100%. You can put your shirt back on. I'm releasing you for duty. I'm sure you will want to join the others in the briefing room.
Yes, ma'am. Thank you Doctor.
The Corporal put his shirt back on, jumping down from the table, gave me another salute. I returned it. I watched him walk away. He turned quickly just as he got to the door. Smiled and gave me another wink, but was gone too quickly for me to respond. I still couldn't figure out what that was all about, but I had no time. I needed to go to the briefing room myself.
Wyatt your in charge, if you need me I'll be in the briefing room.

Walking into the infirmary, I saw Alice sitting in a chair next to a bed occupied by a mech warrior. I couldn't see who it was at first. Ii also saw Net in a bio bed as well.
I walked over to the bed Alice was sitting by and grabbed his chart, looking it over for details.
"Alice? This is Taylor? The guy that was in here just before we left on our mission?"
"Yes Dr. Sturina, we transfered him over from the Liberty as soon as we got here. He is still in pretty bad shape. He is only conscious for brief moments. I have stayed by his side, he needed round the clock care."
"Yes, I can see from his chart it was a close one for him. Dr. Edwards and you did an excellent job. However, Alice, you must let others come and relieve you so you can get rest. We don't want you getting sick too."
"Yes, Dr. I know. It's just he was so critical I just couldn't leave his care with anyone else. I've been fine. I sleep, so I'm just fine."
"Ok Alice, but he is out of the woods so while I'm in here feel free to go get some rest or food."
"Ok, Dr. Saturina. If I need to go I will."
I went closer to Taylor, looking at the vitals read outs above his head. He was stable. I Then went to the bed Net was in. He was awake.
"Hi Sargent Net. How are you feeling today?" I said to him as I read his chart.
"I've felt better Doc., but I'm sure I will live."
"Well, looking at your chart, it looks like you were pretty banged up when they brought you in but ..... I continued to look at his chart.
"But .......?"
I looked under his covers just quickly enough to make him think I was giving him a check. His face froze into a horrified look, there was a long pause.
"Well ..... everything is in tact, we haven't cut anything off yet." I said this trying to keep a straight face. I couldn't look at him directly though. I suddenly heard him let out a long sigh of relief. Then I let out a soft laugh."
"Don't worry Sargent, you are just fine. A few days to rest Net, you'll be up and out of here in no time."
"Thanks Doc."
I don't think Net really appreciated my humor. Guess I was going to have to watch who I did that to. I giggled softly to myself. I walked to the door, looking back at Alice.
" I know you're not going to leave his side so I'm going to the Mess Hall, can I bring you anything back?"
She looked a little embarrassed.
"No Doc. I'm fine thank you."
"Ok Alice, page me if you need me."
I headed for the Mess hall. I yearned for the exquisite food there was here in our Mess Hall. It was always a pleasure to eat when we were home.

I sat watching Dr. Saturina walk out of the infirmary. It was good to have her back. They thought they had lost her and Kintaru. I had forgotten to tell her how glad I was to have her back. I looked over at his bed. My mind was so preoccupied with taking care of him. I got up and walked to his bed.
I stood over him, watching him sleep, my eyes caressing the contours of his handsome face. My hand went instinctively to his hand. I gently touched his fingers. He had only brief moments of consciousness. I didn't think he even knew who I was yet. I took the cool sterile cloth and wiped the sweat from his forehead gently.
"The Doc was right .... I would not leave his side."
I hoped and prayed he would awake one of these times and be able to speak to me coherently, recognize my face. Know that I was real and not an Angel. Although that was kind of sweet. I looked at him one more time his face already burned into my memory. My thoughts went back to before the mission. All the times I had seen him in the hall ways. Running into him in the Mess Hall. I don't think he noticed me, but I had definitely noticed him. Now .... here he was .... under my care, I would make sure he would pull through what ever it would take. His close call with death had made me realize how important he had become to me. I sighed softly turning, I went back to my chair, pulled it a little closer , went back to reading and waiting.

My eyes slowly opened, the florescent light burning them momentarily as my pupils adjusted. The world slowly came into focus after what seemed to be a disturbing dream.
As I looked about, I realized where I was and that my dream had been real. The question was, how much of it was real. I turned and saw a female Medical Technician.
I blinked hard as I tried to sort out fact from fiction. She was the face of the angel in my dream, but was I really awake, or was she real. The face was very familiar, the same as someone I saw often but never really met.
Instead of startling her I just cleared my throat and when she turned to me I smiled.
Ah, you're awake. How are you feeling?
Well, I've definitely seen some better days.
She laughed softly.
Well, you gave us quite a scare. You almost didn't make it.
Well, I got lost for awhile, but I had an angel guide me back.
I flashed a smile at her and I saw her blush a little.
Did the Captain survive?
Yes, he made it out just fine. I can assure you he's not a resident at the base's Infirmary.
Here? Wait, this isn't the Liberty? How long was I out for?
A couple days. We transferred you off the Dropship Liberty as soon as we arrived. We've only been here a day.
My mind reeled as I realized that I have been unconscious for the better part of 3 days.
Was I really that bad off?
Well, you're still not 100% yet. Though, you had a broken left leg, hyper extended left arm, a few busted ribs, some gashes on your head and a slightly punctured lung. Your right side faired much better, just multiple abrasions and some contusions. You even flatlined once, aside from some major blood loss.
Well, good thing you were there. That list is a testament to your ability as a Med Tech.
She blushed again slightly, but I realized that I liked this woman. I liked her before I was here I realized. I had seen her all over. Sometimes reading a book in the commons, eating quietly in the Mess Hall and just in the walkways around the base and Dropship.
Oh, I don't think we've been properly introduced. I'm Marcus and you are?

He was finally awake and coherent. My heart was pounding hard, I was sure he could hear it. I was having trouble looking directly at him. I felt like a school girl meeting the guy she has a crush on for the first time. I know I blushed a couple of times. I needed to get a hold of myself.
"Um .... yeah well, not properly introduced but I've seen you around. My name is Alice."
I held out my hand to shake his, he started to move to take my hand but winched in pain. I pulled my hand away quickly.
"Oh no, don't move, I'm sorry I should have realized. Just lay still. You still have a lot of healing to do Marcus."
He eased himself back into a resting position.
"I guess you're right. We will leave the hand shake for some other time."
"Marcus, you need to just rest. We had to do a lot of surgery on you. Only time is going to heal all of that. We can do a lot in here, but the healing is still up to you. So maybe you better just rest."
"Well, I think you have had more to do with my healing then you think. You've been here from the start haven't you?"
"Yes, but it's my duty to be here and take care of you."
"Maybe, but I get the feeling that you have done more then your duty calls for, but I am still tired. So I will do as you say and rest."
He drifted back to sleep. I was beyond happy. He had finally spoke a coherent word, he knew who I was. Things were really starting to look better. I turned and sat down, Keeping vigil over him once again.

* Methodical beeping of a healthy heart on an EKG. *
White fluorescent lights flooded my retnas, causing my pupils to constrict and dilate until my eyes adjusted.
I blinked a few times and looked over to where Alice sat, maintaining her usual vigil over me. I watched her slowly, trying to catch a glimpse of her before she noticed I was awake.
She seemed to be lightly napping and I watched her, and sighed softly. She seemed more beautiful now that I realized my angel was real.
However, I tried to sit up and winced in pain. I guess my grunt of discomfort roused her from her sleep. She wiped her eyes and looked at me. She put her hands on her hips and gave me a smile amid a slightly stern look.
Hey Mister, just what do you think you are up to?
Hey, I wasn't doing anything bad Alice. I was just trying to sit up on my own.
Well, you still need to take it easy.
I know, but at least you're here. I could use the company. Though can I ask you a favor?
As long as it's reasonable, I'm sure I could do someting for you. What did you want?
I'm a bit hungry. Think I could get something to eat?
You should be able to. Can you use a utensil?
Let me try.
I moved my good arm to my mouth as if I was trying to eat from a plate. I winced in pain as I began to raise my arm to my mouth.
Ahh, sonnuva...
