The wind howled through the windswept planes—sounding much like an AeroSpace fighter at full thrust—too much in fact. Any doubts I had were immediately erased with the sonic boom of the fighter shooting overhead, scanning for its target. Hiding behind one of the plains many rocky outcroppings I was protected from a visual scan, and with my ‘mech in lower power mode I didn’t need to worry too much about his thermal sensors. Unfortunately for me, the iron content really didn’t kick in until about a half-klick before the Western Mountains and I was a good two kilometers away. I assumed that Kazansky had spotted me with has MagScan during his earlier pass because his next turn brought his target right into his sights: me.

That arrogant bastard…
I couldn’t believe it—he really thought I wouldn’t see him there? Even without MagScan I would have found him no problem—no one hid from me. I was hoping that the Commander would have been a better challenge—but then again I couldn’t really expect much from any MechWarrior; they were all talk and no walk. My sights glowed gold as I acquired a lock—Garland was about to feel the combined heat of twin extended range large lasers and the devastating impact of a heavy gauss rifle. Just as my crosshair passed over the Shadow Hawk’s head I fired, unleashing a devastating alpha strike.

No way he’s going to have me that easily…I could almost feel Kazansky putting pressure on the trigger, but he’d wait for that sweet headshot; he wanted to finish this right now. A split second before he fired I thrust out my ‘mech’s right leg, ending up in a crouching position shifted a meter right of the position that I’d just been in. Simultaneously I unleashed my Ultra AutoCannon-5 at the incoming Eisensturm, the staccato of shots echoing in the frigid air. Somehow, Kazansky managed to pull an Immelmann just as the shots were going to reach him, planning out well above my head. He pulled a second one just to gain some more altitude—he was going to pull and devastating dive against me—my UAC5 couldn’t point straight up!
I was surprised when the dive never came; all I received was a radio message, “Ikarus-1, this is Wildcat-1, do you copy?”“This is Ikarus-1.” I had chosen my callsign as an intentional pun to the AeroJock; Ikarus was a boy whose arrogance cost him his wings… “Is there something wrong Corporal?”“I’m not sure, sir. I just picked up a distorted and garbled message from what may be the planetary militia. I seems like some jamming is coming into play because I’m only receiving white noise now—the local news stations aren’t even getting through. I’m patching the recorded message through now…
…[glow=brown,2,300]under…[/glow]withdrawing…1st Urban Warf…[glow=navy,2,300]ser’s Folly[/glow][shadow=red,left,300]…Word…[/shadow] The message was pretty garbled, but I understood enough. “Corporal, there’s really only one thing to do. Get back to base first though and refit your fighter for combat—I’ll make best speed back there but this terrain is rocky—I don’t know how long I’ll be. Make sure to have the astechs ready to fit my ‘mech for combat—I wouldn’t want to enter battle in training gear.”Looking up I saw Kazansky’s AeroFighter rocket over head back towards Site 187—it’d only take him a few minutes to be back on the ground but it’d be at least an hour before I made it back through the rocky planes—hopefully the situation wouldn’t get any worse before I made it back to base. Without the ability to communicate with the base due to the mysterious jamming I was left completely in the dark…
