Captain Maxwell excused himself to tend to his duties. There was a lot to sort through. I knew my techs were more than capable of completing their duties unsupervised and I bore in mind that Capt. Maxwell also had command authority over the Operation.
Commander Wayne and myself walked away from most of the commotion and discussed things that had transpired since we were separated.
So what now?
Well, after a debriefing, we will be heading off to secure Capt. Maxwell a new base of operations since his last one was eradicated by the Word of Blake. Beyond that, I'm not too sure. Final preparations are being made for my return to our original unit.
What about you?
I like it here. My mission isn't complete, but counting myself, there are 4 of us that are...leaving this unit. When the time comes and I was hoping that we'd be able to join either you or Captain Maxwell.
You know that you are the only one that could return to our unit with me. The others, would be treated fairly as is our custom, but they would not hold a place among us as equals. Perhaps they could join Captain Maxwell?
That is an idea. I'm sure that Schuster, Taylor and Lourde would be willing to go with Captain Maxwell.
We...I would have to discuss that with the Captain. However, it is his decision. Schuster has proven himself, but the others Maxwell may have suspicion of.
Yes, I understand. Dillenger, what about us? I know our separation was due to our mission requirements, but it won't affect us for much longer.
I watched Mamba as she walked by. She looked over briefly and and before I could smile back, she looked away as she continued towards where most of the Legionnaires were congregating.
Well...It's been a long time. I've thought about you and many times wished you were by my side, but I don't know right now. I need to think about some things. We weren't exactly supposed to meet again...at least not like this.
Commander Wayne scrunched her face and looked in Mamba's direction and then back at me.
It isn't someone else is it? That MRBC woman seems have your attention somewhat.
I sighed. Unsure of what she was referring to, but also due to the fact that despite the fact that I was upset with her early in the Op and was trying to block her out, she did have a certain thing about her that I admired.
Loyalty? Or was it something more?
I shook my head and focused back on Commander Wayne.
No, there is no one else. We can discuss this later, as I have a few matters that I need to attend to.
But...Dillenger, I still have feelings for you. Please don't shut me out because I chose another assignment instead of coming with you.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened my eyes, I turned away and began walking towards Captain Maxwell. There was a great many things that we needed to discuss and a few loose ends that needed tying up.
As I walked away, I heard Commander Wayne shift a little as she tried to regain her composure before returning to her troops.
Things flew about my mind as I tried to keep them repressed.
Now is not the time to forget why you are here...

The battle was finally over. Kintaru stopped the Atlas and powered it down. He opened the cockpit door. Since it was very tight quarters in there we couldn't move around much, so he grabbed me by the hips, hoisting me up and out. I climbed down to the ground, waiting for him to join me. We walked over to where the Alacom tanks were being prepped.
Thanks for helping me out Kintaru, I was a little worried there for awhile.
No problem Mamba. It was my pleasure to be of help.
Just then I seen Captain Maxwell walking our way. Kintaru left my side, walking over to meet him. I looked around, seeing Captain Dillenger talking with the Captain from the other ship. I had not been introduced to her. I saw the rest of the Legionnaires, standing over in a group. I walked in their direction, passing by Captain Dillenger and his companion. Reaching the group, I stood near Captain Gunman.
Well, Sir looks like this one is over and we came out on top. Which is always the best place to be.
I smiled up at him. He gave me an odd look. Looking around the group they all had rather funny looks on their faces. Suddenly everyone burst into laughter.
Well I'm glad I lightened the mood a little. I think we all needed a good laugh.
Yes, Commander I think we could all use more then a laugh. Maybe a little R&R would be nice.
Yes, Sir I completely agree.

But...Dillenger, I still have feelings for you. Please don't shut me out because I chose another assignment instead of coming with you.
I had trouble keeping my composure at Joseph's cold shoulder. There was so much that we had together before I chose to take another assignment. I had desperately wanted honor from my exploits in battle, but Dillenger was always there and overshadowed me.
I closed my eyes for a moment.
For clarity I'm marking the start and end of this flashback.
Flashback Start.
He's missing. Presumably dead.
What?! No...He...he can't be.
The news was crushing. My lover of almost 3 years was dead. He was assigned to a Star that was sent into House Kurita space on a raiding mission.
We think he may have been captured. Although, it's unlikely considering that remains of his Hellbringer (Loki) Soul Reaper wasn't found anywhere. The rest of his Star are also unaccounted for.
My God...He must have survived! He would never allow himself to be captured. He would rather...The word hung on the tip of my tongue for several seconds. Hesitant to admit the fact he might actually be gone forever....die.
I'm sorry maam.
End of flashback.
When I opened my eyes again, he wasn't in sight. Once again I had lost him, but only for a moment. I steeled my emotions and decided that I would not lose him again.
I turned and walked back towards my Dropship. The time had come to make the pain I had endured on this operation to come to an end. It was time to return to the Clan.
The time has come...No more shall Dillenger and I be forced to wear the name of a freebirth...
I typed a short encrypted outgoing message on my datapad. It simply read.
The Spirits are restless.

The cargo VTOLs dusted off from the base, carrying with them the sum of the allied forces that had remained behind. As the triangular formation thudded away from the ravine, the comms crackled with radio traffic.
"Demo one, reporting airborne. Ready op."
"Demo two, reporting airborne. Ready op."
"Daedalus command copies. Are the Legionnaires out of the area?"
"We are away, Daedalus."
"Copy that, Bishop-2. Home Plate is prepped for Chariot Squadron's arrival. Demo crews, once your VTOL has reached minimum safe distance, you may commence Operation Firestorm at your discretion."
Moments later, a blinding flash erupted from the heart of the Blakist installation. A translucent hemisphere of debris, atmospheric distortion, and seismic disruption blossomed outward from the center of the detonation. A rumble began echoing off the rocky walls surrounding the fortified structure, growing steadily louder. Soon after, massive cracks began to form in the base's tarmac, and a section of the 'Mech hanger was swallowed up by the earth as the base's subterranean structure began to collapse. Plumes of fire shot from the ground, as utility lines began to consume themselves in a hellish chain-detonation of uncontrolled gasses and leaking fuel lines. A second, much more powerful explosion jarred the ravaged base as the Lyrans' specially-designed seismic-disruption charges imploded the twin vaults which remained protected in the subterranean caverns. As they collapsed, the mighty natural supports which had held up this section of polar tundra for millennia gave way, and what remained of the base was literally swept clean from the planet's surface, as the earth opened a gaping maw to swallow it.
"Whoohoo! Demo One reporting in. Scratch one installation!"
"Demo Two reporting in. We got 'em!"
"Dadealus control copies."
"This is Bishop Control. Copy base demolition successful. Nice work, guys."

I slowly opened my eyes. It hurt. I suspected the drugs that were repressing the balance of my pain had something to do with it. I tried to lift my head, but a wash of nausea and dizziness prevented that endeavor from getting very far.
I glanced around. I wasn't sure where I was. A medical facility for sure, but how I went from sitting in a gunner's chair in full combat gear, to laying in bed in a nightgown, and not much else, escaped me.
"You're awake."
I tilted my head. It was Captain Maxwell. No longer in his combat gear, he presented a commanding appearence in his battle dress uniform.
"Where am I?"
"You're aboard the DropShip Liberty, attached to the JumpShip Samurai's Destiny. You were wounded in combat, and lost consciousness due to blood loss. Kintaru's medicine is strong, but sometimes, more...invasive...techniques are needed to patch things up the way they need to be."
I was confused. I remembered Commander Wayne sending reenforcements. I remembered us fighting alongside the Legionnaires. So why had I not been transferred? Was I still a prisoner?
"Where is Commander Wayne? Why am I not aboard her vessel? Was she..."
My words trailed off. I didn't want to finish the sentence. I didn't want to consider the possibility that she had not made it off New Wessex alive.
Captain Maxwell clasped his hands behind his back and looked down at me.
"Commander Wayne is fine. Captain Dillenger was the one who requested that you be brought here."
"For what purpose?"
"I believe your questions would best be answered by a conversation with him. If you'd like, I can arrange for you to speak to him."
"With your permission, Captain, I'd also like to speak to Commander Wayne."
The Captain nodded. His demeanor was gentle - very non-confrontational. I didn't have to ask if I was still a prisoner. I had long ago learned to read a person's mannerisms. Benjamin Maxwell conveyed an aura of trust and quiet confidence that was extremely disarming. And yet...there was a sadness about him that I couldn't explain. Perhaps it stemmed from the profound loss of Tau Ceti IV - but I sensed it went deeper than that. His ComStar service record had been sealed - even against inqueries from agencies with as much influence as Section 8 - but I suspected that there lay the answer.
"Get some rest. And stay off that leg. The medics here will attend to whatever needs you may have. I'll arrange to have Captain Dillenger and Commander Wayne here within the hour."
I nodded, and closed my eyes.
"Oh, and Schuster..."
I opened my eyes.
"...well done."
With that, Captain Maxwell stepped through the sickbay's double doors, and disappeared down the corridor. I closed my eyes, and drifted into fitful sleep.

Maxwell stepped out of the sickbay doors with a slight smirk on his face.
“Is he going to be ok?” I said, already knowing the answer from his expression.
“He’s going to be fine… he’s one tough cookie” Ben replied through the large window in front of us into space. We both leaned against a rail as we absorbed the black beauty that had all the peace, serenity and calmness today’s mission was missing.
“Isn’t it ironic how peaceful this war ridden space is?” I said in a quite tone. Maxwell chuckled and agreed without speaking.
“I have that report you requested about site 187” I said, handing him a small dossier.
The researchers seemed a little reluctant to give this at first… but I eventually persuaded them. There isn’t much there that wasn’t on The Generals Pocket computer, however the final page does state that you or Captain Wolf can have the ownership transferred to your names. And as we discussed before, the only person that could stop you from doing so would be Murlance…”
Maxwell took the papers and shifted through the pages quickly, glancing and taking in highlighted words. Whilst his mind was on this, mine was on others. I was still a little overcome with shock over the death of the General. He was the first person I had come into contact with since the incident in the Cantina. Without him I wouldn’t be where I am today. I remembered how he saved me from certain capture back on Tau Ceti IV. I remembered how Maxwell and I had saved him from the destroyed Thorin. And then I remembered how he ditched us in battle… the effects of his betrayal almost cost the lives of everyone. Had I been a pawn for him? OR was I just another “Legionnaire”, another member of his envisioned “cannon fodder” team? The possibilities were endless for what he had in store for us… but still… felt I had lost a friend. He was perhaps the only person that believed me about the Jade Stone Fortune after all. But I also knew he had to be stopped. My thoughts and mixed emotions were interrupted by Ben.
“Excellent work Corporal… I’ll let the rest of the team know about your findings after a little R&R… those guys have been through hell.” We both gave a nod in agreement as a sad smile plastered our faces.
“Your thinking about him too, huh?”
“… Your perception skills are quite impressive”
Maxwell had known the General longer than I had. There seemed to be some sort of mutual understanding between those two, which seemed very apparent from the start… or it did to me.
“The paradoxes of life…eh?”
Again, that same sad smile grew on the captain. It almost seemed like a guilty smile. We stood in silence as out faces turned back to space.
Suddenly the PA came online, a deep and slothish voice boomed out from the speakers:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, we will be serving food in the cafeteria in 10 minutes.”
Care to join me for some fine dehydrated - REhydrated cuisine sir?”
We both let out a hearty laughter and made our way down the corridor for some "food".

We were finally done. It had been one of those Ops... seemed like we didn't have the greatest luck in the world. Fortunatly, it seemed we had made some new friends. That seemed to be normal for us, making some new friends each op.
As the dropship arrived at the Samurai's Destiny, I looked out a window toward the planet we had just left. You could almost see a "dent" where the base had collapsed into it. I headed towards the equipment rooms to put back the borrowed guns and such. There weren't many people in the room, just some techs running around, trying to keep everything in top shape.
After that was done, I went to my room to rest. I put the gun and knife I found on the dead Blakists on my counter, and layed in bed going over what had happened. We were betrayed by a general of the MRBC, and I had no idea what was going on with that. The Keith fellow had proven himself to be a steadfast recruit, someone who wasn't going to betray us. But it also seemed he had a secret. If there was one thing I had learned from the Ops with the Legionnaires, it had been identifying people.
It had not been long before the comms came on and told us of the cafeteria opening. I stood up and navigated my way through the ship to the cafeteria. I saw Captain Maxwell and Keith both coming down the hall talking with eachother, and I noticed quite a few of the other Legionnaires sitting down in the cafe already. The food in this place was about as bad as back at Tau Ceti, but it didn't bother me. I hadn't really had a whole lot of action, besides a little bit of fire in that hall when the General escaped. I quickly got my food and went to sit down with the rest of the Legionnaires around a table near the middle of the room.

I had just gotten out of the shower, getting dressed when I heard the call about food being served. The food on the ships were not that good but anything was better than what we had been eating on the mission. I rushed to get dressed. Stepping out of my room walking along the corridors to the dinning room, I ran into Captain Gunman.
Evening Sir, are you on your way to the dinning room?
Good Evening Commander, yes I am, you?
Yes, I am too Sir, may I walk with you?
Of course your company is most welcome
We actually walked the rest of the way in silence, neither of us really knowing what to say. I always felt a little nervous around Captain Gunman, not really sure why.
We finally reached the dinning room, Captain Gunman open the door, letting me walk in a head of him, I smiled a thank you at him. We both walked over to the table where Captain Maxwell and Kintaru were sitting.
Mind if Captain Gunman and myself join you?
They both said at the same time. Please do!!
We both grabbed our food, going back to the table, I sat between Captain Gunman and Kintaru. I began to eat my food in silence, but had something really important I wanted to talk with Captain Maxwell and Gunman about. I didn't really know if this was the right time but I decided to jump right into it.
Captain Maxwell and Captain Gunman, I have something I really need to discuss with you.
Captain Maxwell spoke Go ahead Commander, we're listening.
Well, Murlance is gone and my contract with the MRBC ended with him. I have really enjoyed working with the Legionnaires. Your team is one of the most loyal and trustworthy, I have had the pleasure to work with. My question Sirs is this, I want to know if you might have a place for me on your team? You don't have to answer right away. I can understand you might want to discuss it between you, but I just wanted to let you know I am interested.
The Captains looked at each other, they smiled. I hoped that was a good sign. I waited quietly for one of them to speak.

Meanwhile…
The first thing I noticed was light. It was seeping into my brain somehow forming a shape, a crescent. The crescent widened considerably and I noticed that this light was much more detailed than I expected.
I was awake, but without the feeling of grogginess which I had come to associate with my brief jaunts of consciousness. I looked at the IV stand next to my bed, once again tracing the IV line, but it did not end in my arm; I was free, and very hungry. The doctor noticed that I was awake and came over to see me.
“Lieutenant, how do you feel?”
I replied, “Fairly well. In fact, I can barely tell that I was shot just a few days ago.”
“Actually, you’ve only been out for about one day. Our advanced medical facilities had a restorative which helped mitigate the effects of the byproduct toxins from the stimulant which you were administered.”
“Excellent!” I said, impressed with the doctor’s skill, “Can I leave sickbay now?”
“Certainly, but you’ll need to come back for tests after we make the jump.”
“Jump? Where are we headed?”
A smile spread across the doctor’s face, “Why… our new home of course. I’m sure one of the captains will explain all of the details. Why don’t you head over to the mess hall, I’m sure that one of them will be there.”
“Thanks a lot doc, I’ll head right over to the mess hall to grab some grub and info.”

During the demolition of the base, Captain Maxwell had me research some sort of base that they were apparently moving into. After a few radio conversations, I didn't see anything out of place and informed him. Upon hearing the news, he asked that I take him there so that he could "move in" so to speak. The topic of me being a Clanner never came up, but I knew that sooner or later I had to tell him.
I sat quietly in the mess hall off to the side away from the rest of the crew and the Legionnaires. There was a lot on my mind and I decided it was best to not be rude and be preoccupied while I was with them. Hopefully Captain Maxwell would take notice and eventually come talk to me.

I sat with Schuster in the Infirmary of the Samurai's Destiny. We had been friends since I joined the unit. He was always straightforward with me, though I'm not entirely sure why. He knew why I was there and he was also aware that I was a Clanner. Sooner or later, our friendship would be put to the test. I decided that the time for that would never come.
Nick, we need to talk about something.
What is it?
I want you to stay here. With the Legionnaires.
What? May I ask why?
I looked around the room to see if anyone could hear. Satisfied that the place was safe to talk.
My mission here is complete. I want you to stay here where it's safe.
I cannot abandon my unit. OUR unit Commander.
Special Agent Schuster. I'm ordering you to remain here. For medical recovery and evaluation.
I see. Are there other's that are required to stay here?
Yes, Wedge and Taylor.
Ah, do they know as well?
Yes, I told them shortly after dustoff. You were the last, because I know you've got a lot at stake here. My clan, although forgiving to freebirths, will not allow the survival of this unit. And if the IS ever found out you were helping a Clanner spy, you would be tortured.
I understand Commander. I'm still not feeling well. I think I will stay under supervision of this Medical facility until we reach this new base I'm hearing about.
I see. Well, your request is approved. Do keep in mind that you need to get off this ship soon as well.
I see. Well, I must get some rest. When will I see you next?
Soon, I hope.
I got up and we snapped one another salutes. I smiled and walked out.
I headed towards my shuttle to return to the Dropship. I contemplated finding Dillenger before I left, but I'd see him again soon enough. He would receive a transmission that would inform him of his duty soon enough.
Life as we know it will return to normal...sort of.

Post by MechWarrior Sergei Zhukov on Jun 15, 2005 23:32:26 GMT -5
We all sat around the table and ate the food. It could have been better, but I'd take this food over whatever it was that was served at the Cantina on Tau Cet IV. We talked about all sorts of things.
Eventually, it was my turn. I could tell that some of the lighter stories were told and that matters turned to things of a more serious nature. I had to confess on my own now, or me punished worse later if the truth came out on it's own.
Fellow Legionnaires, I think it's time that the truth about this mission from my point of view.
All eyes turned to me and the table began to get very quiet. Captain Maxwell spoke.
I see. Well please Sgt. Zhukov, go on. I for one am quite interested in hearing this.
Yes Captain.
I used to be a part of the local milita. I was under the command of a General Ren. I wouldn't say I was his right hand man, but he seemed to get certain enjoyment out of my loyalty and battle tactics. He wasn't thrilled when I transferred to the Legionnaires, but he didn't exactly try to persuade me to stay.
Well, I haven't heard from him outside of my blessing into the Legionnaires. Until this mission...
I looked about the table and then at Captain Maxwell. He was intrigued, but his eyes narrowed.
What did he want Sergeant?
He wanted...the data from the Vaults. Though I wasn't nearly as willing as the General was to endanger the lives of the Legionnaires.
General Murlance? You were working with him?
No, actually I didn't know about him until we, as in the Legionnaires found out.
There's also this. I was supposed to take it for General Ren, the data was actually a bonus.
I placed the Jade Map Stone on the table.
Keith, I believe this belongs to you. I'm sorry that I betrayed your trust. For that, Captain Maxwell, I hereby surrender myself to you to the charge of treason.
The words hung in the air. I waited for the response.

As Captain Maxwell began to speak, Sergeant Zhukov caught his attention with a sudden confession. Knowing he was about to become embroiled in a not-so-quickly-resolvable situation, he nodded to me, before tackling the intricacies of the problem which had suddenly arisen.
I turned toward Commander Mamba.
"Commander, your performance this mission has been nothing short of exemplary. You performed outstandingly in the face of severe adversity, and your actions speak volumes about your character. I, for one, would be honored to have someone of your caliber amongst our ranks, and I am certain that Captain Maxwell feels the same. If you wish to become a part of our organization, we'd be honored to have you. It's not the MRBC, but it does have its moments. And your qualifications certainly speak for themselves."
I smiled at the Commander, and extended my hand.
"Welcome aboard."

The obsidian veneer of the Jade Map Stone glistened in the cafeteria's artificial lighting, as I gazed at it for long moments. Although conversation continued all around us, those in the immediate vicinity of the confession remained silent. It seemed as though everyone was holding their breath, waiting pensively for my response.
I looked toward Zhukov.
"Sergeant Zhukov...no words can adequately describe the amount of shock and betrayal I felt when I intially learned of the path General Murlance decided to follow. Likewise, to now know that you were involved in a similar transgression gives me good cause to feel the same feeling of mistrust."
Zhukov looked crestfallen.
"However...given Nicholas Schuster's testimony concerning the events leading up to General Murlance's death, as well as Captain Dillenger's ex post facto analysis of the same, I believe I understand why things happened the way they did.
"Fear is your most powerful enemy, Sergeant. Fear has the power to repel armies - and to cloud the minds of rational, noble men - such as yourself - to the point that they're unable to distinguish right from wrong.
"You made a mistake, Sergeant. But you redeemed yourself. You worked through that fear - you worked through it, and you were able to see the truth - and you made the right choice when it mattered most. That's what's important. We all make mistakes. The important thing is that you learn from this, Sergeant, and never, ever let fear cloud your judgement again."
Sergeant Zhukov nodded.
"We're going to get through this, Sergei. But I need to know that I can count on you stay the course, and talk to somebody if you're ever feeling conflicted. We're all in this together - and we - all of us - must never forget that. You are just as important as anyone else - and we care about you."
I rose from my seat, and extended my hand. Sergeant Zhukov looked at my hand, and then at me.
"It's a hand, Sergeant. It won't bite you." I smiled.
Zhukov rose from his seat as well, and took my hand. I gave him a firm handshake, and clapped him on the shoulder from across the table. As I did so, I noticed Captain Dillenger, off in a corner of the cafeteria, seated alone. He looked distraught.
"If you'll excuse me...I need to take care of something."
I grabbed my tray, popping it into the auto-washer as I made my way over to Dillenger's table. As I approached, he looked up at me.
"Captain Maxwell. What can I do for you?"
"I was about to ask you the same question. Mind if I sit down?"
Dillenger looked like he was about to answer, but a flashing light on his datapad prevented any further conversation. Tapping the screen, he glanced at the message grimly, before returning his focus to me, a look of extreme concern in his eyes.
"Captain...there may not be time."

I continued to eat my meal, reminding myself to thank the cook for a meal that was better than average. Though I had a feeling that I got better food whether I wanted to or not because I was the Commander.
I looked up when I heard someone approach."Captain Maxwell. What can I do for you?" "I was about to ask you the same question. Mind if I sit down?"I was about to answer, but a flashing light on my datapad prevented any further conversation. Tapping the screen, I glanced at the message grimly. *** Urgent ***
RE: The Spirit's are restless.
We will arrive within 20 minutes. All those to be spared should be secured in their quarters. We have been briefed on the unit that you requested to be spared as they are allies. However, those not clearly denoted as that specific unit will not be spared. Make your preparations ASAP.
You shall not have to suffer for much longer.
END TRANSMISSIONI looked at Captain Maxwell and I was sure my expression showed the nature of the message. I knew what the message meant. I was about to become a Clanner again."Captain...there may not be time." What do you mean? What was the message concering?Captain Maxwell showed concern. Rightly so, because his unit was about to be in extreme danger and there was little time to explain.Captain. Listen to me carefully. You need to get every Legionnaire secured in their quarters. Tell them to stay put and not to interfere. Their very lives depend on it. See to it immediately, but try to not raise alarm if you know what I mean. I looked around and motioned to other crew members of the Samurai's Destiny. The very men and women that served as part of the Gokusotsu.Understood. How much time?20 minutes at the most. Expect much less though. The Captain began to turn away to do what I had asked. I stopped him one last time.Captain. Yes?I don't have time to explain, but make sure your unit is instructed to display the Legionnaire emblem on them in an obvious location. One other thing. Take this. I reached into my pocket and handed him an armband that had the Ghost Bear emblem on it.If you get stuck in the open when things go down. Put it on and stay hidden. Thank you. I assume you will find me when this is over?Yes Captain. I fully intend to. Please hurry.
