Overview:
Based on the original Vulture OmniMech designed by the Clans, the
VLT-LGN-1 reflects the original model in many aspects of the base
model. The largest difference is in the available pod space, the
original model had 28 tons of pod space, whereas the LGN-1 only has
18 tons, but makes up for the lack of weapon space in increased
armour and increased speed. Boasting a top speed of over 96km/h the
LGN-1 is able to outrun most heavy 'mechs and keep pace with many
medium 'mechs. The increased speed and agility is further augmented
by an increase in the armour, from the original Vulture's 160-odd
points of armour to the maximum 201 points of ferro-fibrous armour.
Another variation from the original chassis is the inclusion of a
supercharger in the center torso, as well as a chin-mounted turret
housing twin Medium Pulse Lasers. One drawback to the new model is
its reliance on Clan based weaponry, due to its design based upon the
original Clan omnimech the LGN-1 can only use Clan weapons and has
trouble interfacing with Inner Sphere technology.
Capabilities:
The VLT-LGN-1 is an extremely versatile 'mech as are nearly all
Omnimechs. The ability to change out nearly every weapon on board in
a matter of hours rather than days, or even weeks with some 'mechs,
makes outfitting the LGN-1 for any battlefield very quick and easy.
The LGN-1 accepts omni pods for both its right and left arms, as well
as in the right and left torso, there is also space in both the right
and left leg to mount omni pods although the space is usually
reserved for additional heat sinks.
Its high top end speed makes the 'mech ideal for use in Medium
Lances or fast moving Heavy Lances. In a medium lance it is able to
keep up with most, if not all, the 'mechs within the lance and boasts
more armour and firepower than many medium 'mechs. In a Heavy Lance,
it can provide adaquate firepower in a very mobile form and has
enough armour on it to engage most other Heavy 'mechs without too
much difficulty.
The original Vulture Omnimech was designed to be more of a fire
support unit similar to a Catapult, although it worked this worked to
great effect, the Vulture was still a prominent brawler capable of
going toe to toe with most 'mechs in its weight class. The LGN-1
retains this ability in many aspects, it still maintains the ability
to provide fire support with its "Thunder" variant, but is also a
very capable close-range fighter 'mech with many of its other
variants, its additional armour and increased speed make it even more
effective at hit and run and other guerilla style tactics, a tactic
the Clans look down upon.
The chin-mounted turret with twin Medium Pulse lasers mounted on
every variant, coupled with the ability to flip its arms around to
fire backwards in every variant as well, gives the LGN-1 a nearly
unprecedented field of fire. Capable of bringing most of its primary
weapons to bear on any target within a 360 degree field of fire makes
the LGN-1 a severe threat to any 'mech of equal or lighter mass, and
still a serious danger to nearly any 'mech heavier than it.
Deployment:
The VLT-LGN-1 is a custom built Vulture, designed specifically
for Captain Adam 'Gunman' Wolf of the Legionnaires mercenary unit.
The was only 1 model known to be produced and it is currently in
possession of Captain Wolf, and will likely remain so until the 'mech
is no longer operational. The last confirmed location of the
battlemech was on Sheratan, housed in the Legionnaires base on the
planet within the Chaos March.
Battle History:
There is little battle history available for the VLT-LGN-1 as it
is only in use by Captain Wolf of the Legionnaires. According to what
records we can find on the mercanary unit the 'mech was originally to
be used in a Legionnaires operation with a restriction on weight
limit, the 'mech was not used in live combat though as Captain Wolf
was called off planet during the mission and several subsequent
operations. Wolf is believed to have been involved in some prototype
testing within the Draconis Combine, but this information cannot be
confirmed.
Known Variants:
There are currently 6 known variants for the VLT-LGN-1.
Primary
The primary variant of the LGN-1 is designed
primarily for medium to long range combat, with a semi-decent
logistics plan in place. Relying primarily on its twin UAC/5 for its
heavy hitting power the primary variant has the ability to penetrate
enemy armour at range before using its twin ER Medium Lasers and
chin-mounted medium pulse lasers to finish a target off at mid-range.
Although heat can become a minor issue at closer ranges, for the most
part the 'mech is fairly heat efficient.
A "Shock"
The "Shock" variant was designed with the idea of
guerilla style, hit and run tactics in mind. Using its speed the
'mech would close in to the target before unleashing a hail storm of
ballistic fire in the form of 6 linked Light Machine Guns, firing up
to 120 rounds/minute per gun. To complete the attack twin salvos of
Streak SRM 6-packs can be fired in tandem providing an accurate extra
punch to the hit and run. Should the LGN-1 be forced to engage an
enemy at a distance greater than 180m, the maximum range of the Light
Machine Guns, twin ER Medium Lasers and the chin-mounted Medium Pulse
Lasers provide ample firepower in combination with the Streak SRM6s.
A pair of standard Anti Missile Systems (AMS) are mounted in the
right and left torsos, sharing a single ton of fletchet ammo,
providing a relatively high protection against missile attacks during
its engagements.
B "Thunder"
The LGN-1's "Thunder" variant is the long-range fire
support unit. Outfitted with twin LRM 15 missile launchers with
Artemis IV FCS the "Thunder" can deliver devastingly accurate long
range bombardment, while a set of 4 ER Medium Lasers combined with
the standard chin-mounted Medium Pulse Lasers provide more than ample
firepower to fall back on when ammo runs low. The biggest drawback to
this model is its low ammunition supply and relatively high ammo
consumption rate.
C "Lightning"
In order to maintain its versatility the LGN-1 has
the "Lightning" variant for use in locations with limited logistics,
and where ammunition is scarce. The variant's primary firepower is in
the form of two ER Large Lasers, mounted in the left and right arms,
support fire is provided by a set of 4 ER Medium Lasers, and the
standard 2 Medium Pulse Lasers in the chin turret. The only real
drawback to this design, as with all energy based 'mechs, is the
extreme heat generated during combat, despite the addition of 6 Clan
double heat sinks.
D "Stripped"
During an operation that imposed a weight limit on
the 'mechs available, the "Stripped" variant was created for the
VLT-LGN-1. Removing 5 tons of weight from the weapon pods, the 'mech
only came to a total of 55 tons, barely making the cut off point of
the afore mentioned restriction, but it still retained the maximum
armour and speed limits of a 60 ton 'mech. Outfitted with dual Medium
Heavy Lasers, the LGN-1 provided ample fire at a somewhat limited
range, twin ATM-6s loaded with standard and HE rounds provided ranged
firepower, while an Active Probe and TAG system gave it target
acquisition abilities generally reserved for lighter 'mechs.
E "Dragoon"
The "Dragoon" variant for the VLT-LGN-1 is an
experimental design used for Urban Combat. The variant boasts an
ample amount of firepower in the way of 4 Light Machine Guns, with
sufficient ammo, 4 LRM 5s with 3 tons of configurable ammo depending
upon the situation, and a pair of SRM 6s. The LRM 5s come standard
with 1 ton standard, 1 ton Swarm, and 1 ton Thunder munitions, while
the SRM 6s share a single ton of standard ammo. 4 A-Pods mounted to
the lower legs help protect the 'mech against conventional infantry,
while the Light Machine Guns, and turret mounted twin Medium Pulse
Lasers are extremely effective against mechanized units, and even
armour columns.
