Team - As I'm sure many of you are well aware, the Legionnaires' web site has, in recent weeks, been fraught with technical difficulties that have ranged from minor annoyances to outright outages that have prevented posters from doing anything on the site at all. Consultation with technical support has helped very little, often leaving me with more questions than answers. To that end, I have reactivated the former home of the Crayven Corporation, turning it into a multi-gigabyte centralized fileserver for all of the images, music, and video contained on the forums (which had previously been spread across more than seven ten-megabyte servers), and begun the process of exploring options for us to take control of our own message boards. The most promising service appears to be Invision, which offers a very dynamic forum quite similar to what you're all accustomed to here, which can be installed on our dot com at a reasonable price. However, the question still remains as to how to migrate our nearly 6,000 posts which exist here to the new forums. The obvious (yet nearly unattainable) solution would be to manually re-post everything on the new forum. That is, of course, not an undertaking that any of us would care to explore. The second, much easier, solution would be to obtain our database files from Proboards. However, I have been advised that Proboards will not entertain that idea, and as such, that notion, too, is out the window. New Site looks good Ben. For me whatever you have to do is fine. I would suggest that some of the post that arent so important like some of the ones in the cantina could be done away with. I guess it would depend on how much work was involved in transferring the posts and if everyone could help to do it, because I think it would be a major undertaking for anyone. However, if I knew how to do it I would be glad to do it for you, I'm probably the only one on the site that has the most time on their hands. I have no life LOL, anyway anything I can do to help just let me know.

Does the current Legionnaire site cost at all?
If it doesnt, i have an idea: we dont move anything. My idea is, the new site will mark the start of the one year jump we discussed. This site (the one we are writing on now) will contain everything that happened before the year jump. This way, things can be kept seperate and wont clash with the story line (eg time errors in our writings)
what do u think?

Keith that has got to be one of the best ideas for this whole moving the site thing.
Using the new site strictly for the new stuff would avoid alot of clutter, and as you mentioned any possible clashes in the story lines.
Personally I would still try to move some of the archives over, simply for ease of use during research and what not, but overall keeping this site as an "archive" for our old stuff and using the new site for everything after the time jump would work great.
As far as I know this site is free, although the old saying of "you get what you pay for" seems to be holding true with all the difficulty as of late.

Glad to see you were finally able to get logged in. Apologies for the difficulty you've encountered...it does seem as though the old gal is starting to give out, and I think you hit the nail on the head with your analogy. As it stands now, we are paying nothing, and...well...
I think Keith's idea is fantastic. It is perhaps the most managable way to make the transition, and allows for a new era in the Legionnaires' history to be ushered in while preserving the work that has already been established. Moving the archives over would be relatively easy, as the proposed new forums use the same exact UBB codes as ProBoards. It would be a simple matter of "copy and paste" into the appropriate categories.
One thing I do NOT yet know is whether or not the new forums support the ability to add sub-categories to master categories. That is something that would be essential to our archives, as we have such a vast volume of material.
I am also looking at adding a public FTP folder to the beagleactiveprobe.com server which would allow members to upload their own media files, avatars, and images. This should simplify the process currently in place considerably.
What other features would everyone like to see added?

Perhaps we could use the chatroom some more - the problem right now is that no-one knows if the chatroom is occupied untill they enter it, a tedious process. If we could somehow say, on the main page, hey look there are 2 people in the chat room, that'd be nice. I also think having our own domain would possibly increase membership... it gives the site more legitimacy and an easier name to remember.

Everyone seems to have great ideas for the new site. Would we keep the same general layout and colour scheme? I'm not sure how the new boards would work, but if its our own domain and everything, how would the boards work, would they just run straight from the site, or run from a proxy server. Meaning that the boards and all the data are on our server, but the actual application that operates the forum would be on another server (like running Java from a web server). Also depending on how the new boards would work, we could incorporate alot more into the site itself. As in an actual online Market and really no need for a stand alone program .... if anyone would be interested in such a thing...  . Or at least it would allow for a much easier integration of an economy system into the site itself, while still possibly needing a stand alone program for some stuff. On top of all that, I'll be glad when I can just log in without having to worry about trying to restart the computer or something all the time, lol. |

Everything would be run directly from beagleactiveprobe.com, allowing us total control over our content. For more information on the service, click here. The new design would allow us to manipulate the format, layout, and content to our heart's content, with virtually no restrictions. It looks like you might be on your work computer again? Have you tried rebooting it yet? |

this is fantastic stuff ben! i for one would like to thank you for ur efforts so far  im glad to see ppl like my idea regarding the one year gap. I was thinking instead of porting over the dossiers on our characters, what if we wrote new ones that explained what happened to our characters after the 1 year jump? It doesnt have to be too long, just a little recap on everyone's characters. For example, i will be writing about Saburo's mind problems, his inability to let go off Kei-teh's death and, of coarse, Mr Chingely... So what do u think to this idea? |

I think that would add a nice touch of detail to the characters' backgrounds. It would allow everyone to fill in the gap without too much difficulty, and allow for some information to be included that would help shape the environment the Legionnaires' find themselves in a year from now.
From a technical standpoint, all is in place to begin the development of the new site. The only thing left to do now is purchase a software license that would allow the installation of the Invision Power Board software on our forums - a $70.00 expense. This is something I can finance out of pocket (it would take some time before I could do it, however, as I have quite a few personal expenses on the horizon that must come first), although I am hoping that perhaps the community might be willing to help cover this one and only expense. I would naturally donate as well, and continually post updates as to the amount raised. All of this would greatly expedite the process of bringing the new site live.
What are the thoughts of the community on this?

how can i chip in to help? i am having great hassle with my credit card right now due to the conflicts with my military address.
is there perhaps a way i can send u some money to go towards it? how much would everyone be willing to chip in?
