"Can you give me a list of the current lance assignments ? Pilots and mechs. I can then use one of your terminals to check configurations and rebuild my 'Retribution' to compliment your current mechs."
Commander Garland, any idea of which lance I'll be assigned to or whom I'll be teamed up with ? "

I scratched me 'ead, and thought about it.
"Well, let's see...you got Maxwell in 'is there Daishi, Kintaru runnin' a Hackman, Garland in a Shadow Hawk, and Miyamoto's out there tearin' up 'is Marauder. Apart from that, William Rhodes is usin' a Vindicator to mop fings up a bit."
I stopped to scratch somewhere else, and then continued.
"I fink they're loosely organized at the moment, wot with the Cursed Cutlass bein' shot down. We 'aven't made contact wit 'em yet. Best bet is to assume you may be a lone wolf till you link up wit 'em."

"Lone Wolf, I like the sound of that. Matches my simulator training scenarios.
Say, what are your contacts like ? Retribution is certainly a solid workhorse mech, but not what I would class as ' Lone Wolf '. Too dependant on ammunition and as I found out the hard way, a real headache when that ammo gets hit.
' Lone Wolf ' to me means fast, jump capable, primarily energy weapons, ECM and active probe, hand actuators for brawling, max armour, no XL engine they're too fragile, probally heavy class, independant missions.
Anything ring a bell ? Anything with any contacts ?"
"Well them Liaos got that stealth armour o theirs. Don't know what they've slapped it onto though, that might be of use.
Le'me check me 'puter and get back to ya in a while. I'll see whats 'round .

I stopped typing, and eyed the bloke.
"You do know we got a Shadow Cat on hand, right?"

I had turned away the quarter master to speak with Commander Garland, when I heard.
"You do know we got a Shadow Cat on hand, right?"
Turning back to the Quarter Master," Actually no I didn't." I quickly tried to recall the stats for a Shadowcat. Clan Omnimech, fast with jump, 45 tons, commonly came with a gauss rifle and some medium lasers from memory. I'd have to check up the stats further before I'd make a firm commitment one way or the other. " Almost sounds perfect except that it is a medium. Let me think it over and I'll get back to you.
Say, can you do me a favor ?"
replying cautiously the Quarter Master said "Meybe...wot cha want ?"
"You know that 'junk' I brought with me ?" "Yeah."the Quarter Master replied suspiciously" Yer not expecting me to get that fixed fer ya is ya ?
"No, just the opposite. One of them is a clan assault omnimech, a Gargoyle or Man O War, depending on who's name you use. It's missing it's head and I want to keep the clan lasers but the rest is in perfect condition. It's still got it's clan ultra AC/20 autocannon in perfect working order. Can you advertise it on the net and see if there are any interested buyers ? I'm open to negotiations and trade offers if there are any."
"Yer alright, but I wouldn't hold me breath if I were you"
"We'll be back in a little while to assess Retribution. That should give you enough time to check the bottom of the right foot." I grinned evilly at the Quarter Master before covering my face again.
Turning back to Commander Garland I explained to him that the mechs had been in cargo storage aboard the dropship that brought me here since my last battle. Due to my recovering from my wounds and restricted access to the dropship's cargo bays, I had had very little opportunity to properly assess the condition of my mech and the salvage I had obtained as isorla from the Jade Falcons. As we walked toward the barracks Commander Garland reassured me that since the rest of the unit had just returned from Operation Bloodhound and needed rest and refitting themselves, there was plenty of time for me to see to my mech.
"You may also want to check around the outskirts of Gellen's Heights. There are a number of dealers shall we say. In just about anything you can think of. Tread carefully though if you do go, walking in doesn't guarentee that you'll walk out again, ever, if you know what I mean."
"Sounds very much like where I came from"
That brought a raised eyebrow from Garland, but he said nothing in response as we continued walking.

With Blake’s business in the ‘mech bay finished, for now at least, we continued into the underground hallway connecting the ‘mech bay to the rest of the facility. Tactically, site 187 was perfect especially with the WOBies throwing around atomics as if they were firecrackers these days—it’d take a direct nuclear hit to destroy the base. However, I never got used to the idea of living underground even if my holo-window displayed a serene view of the Cascade mountain range back on Terra. Thinking of my quarters I realized that Blake also needed them assigned. Blake got some looks from passing Legionnaires as we walked towards the quartering sector.

'e was right, soons as that new guy was outa sight I slipped on ovr ana checked the right foot of his mech.
That guy was creepy, with that cheek o' his and keepen his face covered like that an all. That clanner chick didn't do much fer me either. Just as soon kill a guy as give 'im a wink or two.
Anyways I checked out the mechs foot. Looked regular enough, banged and dented up underneath as ya expect but then I noticed somefing up back were the heel bit joins the foot. Theres a join there fer the two bit ta move.
Bugger I went white and almost crapped meself. Thar was a hand in thar. Not just a hand, twas still attached to bit of an arm and from the amount of blood stains looked like the owner was still alive whens 'e was stepped on.
Took me a few minutes enough ta calm down ana call the Capt'n. I dinna know nought elsa ta do and heed 'ave ta know 'bout this.

Finally reaching the mech bay where the Quartermaster master was, I strolled in. Looking around the mech bay, I could not help noticing that it was a very well equipped mech bay. It did not look as if there was anything they could not handle in here.
I finally found the Quartermaster at work on one of the battlemechs. I stood over him clearing my throat. I spoke with authority.
" aaahmmmm ....... Excuse me Quartermaster, but I have come on the request of Morgan Blake to inspect the inventory of personal weapons you have to offer. If you are not too busy, I would like to do this quickly."
The Quartermaster looked up at me suspiciously. I do not think he believed what I was telling him. He stood up still watching me with his eyes squinting, as if he were trying to see right through me. Normally, this delay and his suspicious glances would have made my temper flare and I would have been on him like a wild animal on fresh meat. I held my temper, addressing him in my mind only...... Imbecilic stravag old man, get a move on.
The fact that this would be our new home was what kept me from acting as I normally would. Morgan wanted this, I owed my honor to him and on my honor I would make the best of it. I finally broke the silence once again.
"If you wish you may call Morgan and confirm this with him."
"Naw, tis ok. If ye will follow me, the weapons 'er in da cabinet over 'ere."
I followed him over to the cabinet. He unlocked and opened it wide. I was impressed with the array of weaponry that was displayed before me. I walked closer, inspecting them. I finally choose a powerful but easy to hide laser pistol and a deadly sharp knife that came with a leg holder that I could strap to my leg, hiding it from view. I turned to the Quartermaster showing him my selections so he could sign them out of inventory to me. He handed me a paper to sign. I signed it and was gone out of the mech bay as fast as I came. I headed over to the infirmary. I knew Morgan did not want me at his appointment, but I planned on waiting for him to come out. I knew he felt safe here, but I never felt safe anywhere, therefore believed it my duty to be close by in case he needed me.

That new clanner girl gave me the creeps. And that guy Morgan that she 'ad showed up with was no better. First hiding his face, then revealing half of it is missing. Not to mention the arm we found lodged in the foot of his mech. The hairs on the back of me neck just stood on end when either of them was nearby.
Now she was armed as well. As if she couldn't rip you in half with just her gaze was enough, she'd been authorised weapons as well.
Whadda they say " Friend of my enemy is my enemy" Well I hoped I was never the friend of either of their enemies.

There I was, minding me very own business when me damn 'puter made a noise at me. I was just about to throw me coffee at it before I decided the coffee was too good fer it. Chef had finally made a decent cuppa, he musta gotten luckly last night or somefing like that. So instead I spat me chewing tabbac at it. Musta worked cause it shut up.
Then tha damned thing made 'nother beep at me as if to remind me it twas still thar. I was just about ta punch the keyboard when I realised I had an incomming message.
Figurin it might be important or from the Capt'n I tooks a squizz at it. I'd be darned if it wasn't some yokel interested in tha junk that Morgan bloke dragged in. Seemed who ever it was knew what Morgan had 'cause they mentioned tha Thug as well. Morgan wanted ter keep it far as I 'new and I certainly didn't put it on tha 'net. Somehows they knew we were needing a whole heap of spare weapons, specially clanners weapons after our last op. Seems they be willing ta swap a whole functioning mech and a bunch of bits fer the two mechs of Morgans and some o the bits of that third mech carcass he brought in with him. That third one was the remains of that clanner chicks mech after Morgan beat her in combat. His Thug looked like shit. Hers looked up ta his from what I could tell. After finding that arm, I wasn't game enough ta go near either one o thars mechs and neither was mosta da technicans.

After quickly finishing off a salad I headed to talk to the Quatermaster about my Black Knight. I walked slowly dreading the words I would get for the condition of the 'Mech.
I walked up slowly to the Quatermaster.
Hello Quatermaster.
The man turned around his face turning red as he noticed who I was.
How in da world did ya do that to 'er?, he said pointing at the 'Mech as it rolled in from the Liberty.
I shrugged. I paused a moment then continued.
I came to talk to you about the Fafnir we have. You can sell or scrap the Black Knight.
Quatermaster scratched his head and then sighed.
Alright. Ye can have da Fafnir. I'll sell da Black Knight to repair da Fafnir. Anyting ye want done to 'er?
I nodded.
Yes. I want the other configuration for it. I dont want the heavy Gauss Rifles. I want the one with the regular Gauss Rifles and more lasers.

" Alright, give me a few weeks ana it'll be done. Gotta get us one of dem dar kits from thems Lyrans.
Pur Black Knighty, it breaks me heart ta see ya like this. I spends all me time getting ya pristine and them no good fer nothing mechjocks go ana do this to ya. No appreciation, no appreciation at all.
I betcha hes just gonna get that Fafnir shot ta pieces as well. Well so long as he doesn't git either ones of thems killed outright, it'll be repairable, but it still breaks me heart ta see em with holes in em."

The Quartermaster called me in to his office to tell me that Mechwarrior Alex Thorn had decided to upgrade to the Fafnir for future Ops. Alex wanted the alternate configuration with the standard Gauss Rifles instead of the Heavy Gauss Rifles.
It was a good choice of mech and variant, what with spare parts and ammunition for the Heavy Gauss Rifles being in short supply. Standard Gauss Rifles were much more common and easier to supply and repair.
Out of curiousity I asked if someone else will be piloting the Black Knight. Quartermaster just broke down and cried. Wincing I asked if it was really that bad. Through tears and swollen eyes, he just nodded his head. It must have been bad.
Taking a look into the mech hanger I saw for myself just what had set off poor Quartermaster. There, on the back of a recovery vehicle lay the remains of Thorn's Black Knight.
For some bizzare reason I was reminded of a quote from an old 20th Century movie, "Its only a flesh wound" Something about a medieval Knight who refuses to surrender despite mortal wounds.
Thorn had really gone the full 10 rounds with this one. One torso and arm missing, both legs looked like they had seized actuators, the electronics array on the side of the head looked damaged and I could still smell the acrid odor of burnt circuits and over taxed heatsinks.
Nobody would be piloting this mech for a very long time, if ever again. Spare Parts and the scrap yard were it's future. A pity really because the Black Knight was a fine battlemech.
I called over the tech crews and we began going over the Black Knight.

I was review'en the beasties in thar bays. Reflecting on the carnage them susposed mech-warriars had wrecked on them.
Thorn's Black Knight had ta been written off, so'es we got the Fafnir all dolled up fer him. Even kitted it out with the regular Gauss Rifles as he asked.
Rhodes had had to give his Vindicator back to tha Earthwerks dudes he'ed a borrowed it from. We traded the hellhound in tawards a shiny brand new Verfogler from the Kell Hounds fer him. It had come from that same guy Morgan had traded his junk to fer his new Zeus.
That was one special kinda Zeus, it had all sorts of nifty tricks under the bonnet, Clan XL engine, heavy duty gyro, advanced ECM, targetting computer and a swag o' clan lasers ana PPC. Damm thing could even jump.
Garland had ta have mosta his Shadowhawk fixed up after we recovered it from tha bottom of that once deep lake. The water pressure had really done its job after he blew the hatch. Not that the battle damage 'fore hand was light neither. Good thing he'ed survived. We'ed lost enough good Legionnaire's due to that mission. Garland woulda been the preverbial straw thata destroyed the Legionnaires.

After talking to Rhodes awhile in the cantina I walked to the Quatermaster. The Fafnir had been primed and ready for me and the next OP.
I promise I wont mess her up like the Black Knight.
The Quatermaster turned around.
Ye better not or yer hide is mine.
I held my hands in a jesture of surrender.
Dont worry. I promise.
